LISTEN UP PEOPLE to anyone commenting about BTS downgrading themselves this time to do a cheesy love line concept, ITS NOT THE FIRST TIME THAT THEY HAVE DONE LOVE SONGS. So don’t act like it’s a surprise. For you, I need u, just one day, war of hormone, danger, school luv affair THEY ARE ALL LOVE SONGS but I don’t see you guys commenting on those songs? So why this one?
Hi, just jumping on because I like rant posts and I like conversations about topics within fandoms.
So, the problem isn’t the love songs or the romance aspect of it, it’s the concept and its connection to HYYH that is rubbing people the wrong way. Keep in mind that the theme of a song and the concept of an album are not the same things, a lot of the time they are completely unrelated. Most people that are upset with all of this are upset about the fact that LOVE YOURSELF is being attached to the HYYH series. A series that was more about personal struggle and friendship and now they’ve kind of gone back and scratched that all out and are now re-writing it with new characters and turning it into what a lot of people are interpreting as, “you can only love yourself if someone else loves you first” and a slew of other problematic old school ideologies based around hetero romance cliches, and it’s just kind of a slap in the face for people who felt connected to that series.
No one cares about the love songs. If this had been completely separate from the HYYH series, then I honestly don’t think people would have been so upset, other than the younger fans who are literally just upset because there are humans with vaginas involved with the guys.
The other criticisms, such as BTS having “downgraded” themselves to do these love stories more so come from the fact that BTS was very… different from other idol groups in the sense that they just didn’t use these sort of storylines to this extent (we’re expecting another three part series out of this)—they’ve done MV’s and such, but not this. I mean they literally called these films dramas, replicating K-Dramas and all the tropes that come with it.
Also, their target demographic, which is quite different from many other idol groups, is a lot older, usually matching the age range of the guys themselves, and they also have more stakes in “Western” fan bases than they do Korean or Eastern Asian. Love stories and dramas just kind of don’t vibe for a good amount of people falling within what has been their target demographic for most of their public career. People in their twenties aren’t down with romance like they used to be, basically, and found solace in BTS because they didn’t focus on that as much as they focused on bigger, broader subjects like mental health and politics. So, they’re put off by it and a little disappointed thinking that BTS was something quite unique and different, but now they’ve done a complete 180, while still piggybacking off of the HYYH series which, again, was very important to a lot of people for a lot of personal reasons.
It feels like a downgrade if you are one of those people that were invested in the broader subjects that they were covering in their work. It doesn’t mean that it’s wrong or that they shouldn’t be doing it, it just feels manufactured - which is quite common in KPop, but not as common with BTS, especially within the last couple of years
Like, I’ve mentioned before, people are upset for a million different reasons concerning this album, and none of them are wrong.
